SEND at Harrington Hill 

Harrington Hill Primary School is committed to ensuring that all children have an equal opportunity to develop and fulfil their potential. Achieving Together.’ At Harrington Hill, we want to raise the aspirations of all of our children regardless of whether they have any Special Educational Needs/Disabilities or not. We have high expectations for our pupils and will ensure that all children make progress in both their academic and social and emotional development.

We believe that all children, including those identified as having special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum, which is accessible to them, and to be fully included in all aspects of school life.

Our Aims

At Harrington Hill, we aim:

• To provide an inclusive education for all children.
• To promote welcoming, positive and empathetic attitudes towards all pupils.
• To ensure the early identification of SEND.
• To secure sufficient and appropriate support for the pupil, the parents and the school. We work hard to create and maintain strong links with parents, health, social care and education professionals.
• To promote the individual development of each and every pupil, allowing opportunities for all pupils to become independent, confident, enthusiastic and resilient learners.

Adaptive Teaching

Most children with SEND are taught alongside their peers in mainstream classes where they study the National Curriculum. All teaching staff have a good understanding of ways in which they can adapt their lessons, planning and assessments in order to meet the needs of children with SEND. They do this by:

• Providing work at an appropriate level;
• Adapting tasks and questions to ensure suitable levels of challenge;
• Ensuring a suitable and inclusive learning environment;
• Being sensitive to the individual needs of children;
• Removing barriers to learning;
• Providing appropriate resources;

These strategies, and others, are included in the school’s Adaptive Teaching Toolkit – a bank of agreed strategies that staff can draw from to ensure all children receive quality first teaching.

A small number of children with SEND are taught in smaller groups at certain times of the day. This is to ensure that they are able to access learning at a suitable pace, with more targeted support.

Graduated Approach

At Harrington Hill Primary School, we follow the graduated response approach in accordance with the SEND Code of Practice, assessing our pupils regularly to monitor for any needs that may impact their ability to reach age-related expectations in their learning.

If your child is referred for support we will contact you. The value of positive and active involvement by parents/carers is very important to us.   In most cases, the staff in school will identify pupils who needs support, but, if you as a parent/carer have concerns please do not hesitate to contact the SENCo.

Specialist support

Occasionally a pupil may need an additional assessment and support from a specialist from outside of school. These may include:

• Speech and Language Therapists;
• Educational Psychologists;
• Specialist SEND Teachers;
• Occupational Therapists;
• Physiotherapists;
• Hackney Ark;
• Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS);
• SENDIAGS (The Hackney SEND Information, Advice and Guidance service);
• Young Hackney;
• Reengagement unit;

Where this is the case, a referral will be made, with your consent, and forwarded to the most appropriate support agency. If appropriate, the pupil will undergo an assessment and support is usually provided to the school and parents/carers.

ARP

We are proud to announce the opening of our new Additional Resource Provision (ARP) at Harrington Hill Primary School as of 1st September 2025. This specialised provision is designed to support pupils with specific educational needs, providing tailored interventions and personalised learning approaches within an inclusive and nurturing environment. Our ARP aims to ensure that all pupils receive the high-quality education and support they deserve, enabling them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This addition reflects our ongoing commitment to our values: community, respect, equality, excellence, and kindness, ensuring every child at Harrington Hill can achieve their full potential.

The ARP curriculum works in tandem with the mainstream curriculum offer and some of our pupils attend learning in their year group classroom for part of the week. We provide 2 classrooms that teach a bespoke adapted curriculum to meet the specific needs of the pupils in the class. This balances core and foundation subjects with Speech and Language and SEND/EHCP targets to ensure all aspects of pupil development are met.

Our sensory room provides a calming and stimulating environment designed to meet the diverse sensory needs of our SEND pupils, helping them regulate emotions and enhance focus through tailored sensory experiences. The movement room (opening Autumn 2025), equipped with soft play resources, offers a safe space for physical development, promoting gross motor skills, coordination, and confidence while supporting pupils’ overall well-being and engagement in active learning.
